Princeton WannaBe Blog
I'm not a real historian. I didn't grow up in Princeton. I don't have an Ivy League education.
I'm a total Princeton WannaBe.
Still, I gush about loving the heart of Princeton as much as I can!
This is Why I Can't Back Harvard!

Can you say oops? http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aHou7iMlBMN8

“Surely you agree that Princeton University is a multi billion dollar tax-free hedge fund ……….

(I think he’s afraid I’ll cave – he HAS NOT met a Southern woman with a mission.)
ME: “No, I don’t.”
HIM: (All excited for a heated discussion…….) “Oh really now, that is priceless!”
ME: ME: “Actually, what’s priceless is the economic stability the University has provided our community during national struggles as well as the access we have to her treasures. It’s still miraculous to me that I live within blocks of a Frank Gehry building, I.M. Pei and Picasso sculptures, access to classes to hear the world’s greatest scholars (and students) unravel the mysteries of art, architecture, science and economics. Inconceivable to me that I get to walk the streets with professors like Cornell West, Toni Morrison, Robbie George and Paul Muldoon . Not to mention that this University inspired many graduates who later became generous residents such as Herb Hobler, Michael Graves and Edgar Palmer. Townies’ interests lie far beyond personal consumption. We’re proud the University can attract a broader type of student (even more proud that the students on scholarship can pursue knowledge irrespective of a heavy loan which typically yields a mandatory focus on vocations that produce high paying salaries.) We’re proud that our Borough makes sound investments to protect its safety and beauty which inspires these inevitable leaders of tomorrow.”
HIM: (total quiet) “They should still have to pay taxes.” (THAT’s the best he’s got? I’m done.)
ME: “We’ll compromise – Princeton shouldn’t pay…but Harvard? Make ‘em pay double!
To me, Princeton is the perfect metaphor for ‘What came first? The chicken ……or the chicks? The town/gown were eggs together! Originally the town was the destination and now, anyone would have a tough case saying that the University is a pretty big draw. The town has been responsible in keeping her landscapes lovely and her town safe – (unlike a lot of Ivy League towns – Yale? Frightening at 3:00am……Harvard? Don’t get me started??!! ) In the end, we both benefit magnificently from each other.
This Fall, you’re stuck with your tax bill anyway! Take advantage of the unbelievable, affordable assets available because of the University – like an audited class for less than $120 per class. Let you children take the Gargoyle Tour going on during Halloween. Do the $5 art classes at the Princeton University Art Museum. Trying to save money? Become a RABID fan of the Football Team – tickets are cheap and the Leaguers are great role models!

with a very large marketing/PR arm called Princeton University that has the job of raising the investment capital and protecting the fund’s preferential tax treatment?” HE SAYS, challenging look in his eye.
