Princeton WannaBe Blog

I'm not a real historian.   I didn't grow up in Princeton.    I don't have an Ivy League education.

I'm a total Princeton WannaBe.

Still, I gush about loving the heart of Princeton as much as I can!

Proof that I Hosted a Play Date on Spring Break ....

All of Stosh's friends know that when they run with the Omiecinskis, it's a walk on the WILD SIDE within a Princeton small business:

On playdates,  sons can expect to have to deliver brochures or pitch a few tours as part of the gig.  (Pictured above is Robert Landau refusing a sales pitch.  Below is an aggressive delivery on Princeton University campus, next, the Wednesday chat with Jesse the US 1 delivery dude and then the incentive pay out - YuGiO Cards from Morning Glory.....)

.

Did you know the Gallup children assisted with some of the first Gallup polls on Nassau Street?  (TRUE!)

Did you know a lot of the sales staff at Hulit's are sons and daughters of the original owner?  Lahiere's too?  (YEP!)

Mediterra, Teresas, Witherspoon Bread Company and Eno Terra?  (YEP!)

Ivy Inn is family owned?  (YEP!)

Hoagie Haven?  Nassau Seafood & Co.? (YEP!)

So is Blue Point, McCaffreys, Main Street Cafe, Camillo's Cafe, Witherspoon Grill and the new market coming in on Spring Street .... and countless others too!

Wanna start YOUR own small business in Princeton?

Mark your calendar for April 27th for the Spotlight on Your Business by the Regional Chamber at Trenton Country Club .....  3:30p - 5:30p - the panelists will be telling the truth about what it takes to start a small business .....

The Oldest Cycle Shop in America is Getting Our Bikes Road Ready ??!!

Yep, Kopp's Cycle Shop on Spring Street is the oldest cycle shop in America ....... we're willing to bet Kopp's is the most generous cycle shop in America too!

Need proof?  Here you go:

Did you know Kopp's donated the equipment for the Princeton University students for the first Olympic Games?  (Yep!  True story.)

Did you know Kopp's donates space to store our bikes so our small business can have one less expense to worry about?  (Yep, True story.)

What the Trentonian Would File Under Domestic Abuse,

The Princeton Packet Calls It Good Clean Fun .....

Here's  a shot of Steve O and I at Princyclopedia ...... is THAT the way you spell that word?  Anyhoo .....

Here's Steve O and I dressed as spooky Treasure Island ghosts.  NOT photo'd here is my mom, Donna Renner, who was also forced , I mean, excited to educate kids on the superstitions of pirate folks ....

If you want to see a photo of my mom's get-up, you GOTTA pick up today's Princeton Packet .....

Oh, I can only imagine the comments on facebook and the retweets regarding my consistent and relentless abuse of my family .....

Next year's theme involves Greek Gods and, yes, I'm already planning my mom and Steve O painted in GOLD!  I KNOW!

"It will do you no harm to find yourself ridiculous.

Resign yourself to be the fool you are."

No, this isn't advice from a fellow Princeton Rotarian ......

It's an exerpt from TS Eliot 's The Cocktail Party - It was published in 1949 and written in Princeton at 14 University Place (y'know, next to the smallest house in Princeton) - Supposedly the play is a satire about Eliot's take on Princeton's delirious social scene.

Clearly, I'm too D-List to worry about any stressful Princeton social scene but it's a blast to read about it!

Y'all Never Told Me McCaffrey's Delivers!!!!

I May Never See My Favorite Butchers Again!

Steve and I spent our morning going through each aisle so I can start faxing or calling in my weekly order.  Steve made all sorts of Excel spreadsheets for Weekly Order, Monthly Order, Quarterly Bulk Order, etc.  I don't even know how to open Excel so I plan to just dial them up and say, "We need vittles on Nassau Street!"  (What?  They always know what I need!  Anyhoo....)

There's no limit to what you can buy - just fax or call in your McCaffreys order(s) here:

http://www.mccaffreys.com/contact_us.php

You guys know Craft Cleaners delivers dry cleaning and Hikinson's delivers office/school supplies, right?  I KNOW!

It's really easy to run a family and a biz in the heart of Princeton!

Several generations of a wealthy Princeton family are buried in the walls of Princeton University?

(Yep!  Go past there on a rainy night ..... with one of our EMF Ghost Meters ...... the field device will go to "8" ....)

Due to student and resident testimonials, some believe this could be one of seven time portals in Princeton .....

Not a believa?  Too bad, it's more fun when you do!

Princeton WannaBe Says What? Here's What I Call a Thank You Note!

Did you know a stone from the bombed out House of Commons is embedded in the walls of Firestone Library?  Yep!  (The British officers on duty at Princeton during WWII wanted to express their gratitude for all the hospitality shown to them while they were here.)

Townies know about Cotsen Library inside this Library ....

Don't forget about Princyclopedia tomorrow at Dillan Gym - if you love the programming at Cotsen Children's Library, you'll adore the event tomorrow - 10a - 3pm - FREE!

(Plus, my mom and Steve O will be dressed up in super cheesy pirate ghost costumes to try to pump up ghost tour sales  celebrate  in the family fun event!

It Takes Alot of Guts to OWN a Headshot Like the One John Lithgow Just Sent Us ....

John Lithgow is letting us spread the word about his one man show on April 7th at McCarter Theater ..... it's called Stories by Heart.  www.mccarter.org

(I have to think performing at McCarter means alot since he grew up in the theaters - his dad was Director for McCarter when he went to high school here ...... anyhoo ....)

I wonder if he'll stick around for the PHS Jazz Event at the high school on April 17th?   Our sources say that Laurie Berkner's show on the 17th is the perfect prelude to the event ..... www.princetonjazz.org

My Princeton Banker Knows My Name ... (look here to see why - it's not the big deposits, baby!)

While I'd love to say that it's because Princeton Tour Company is his largest account ...... ahem, I gotta think they have bigger fish to fry.

It's because Bank of Princeton knows that businesses like mine need REAL talent to back them up to bring in the righteous moolah. (I gotta think they've figured out a thriving tour company in Princeton could mean a lot of dough for the town too.  Anyhoo.....)

When I asked my bank to back me for Princeton Pi Day, they did. When I asked them to support the YWCA Tribute to Women, they did.

If you're looking for a world class bank with local commitments, you know where to go  ...... Bank of Princeton - www.thebankofprinceton.com.

Me? A Princeton Rotarian? (yep!)

Just when you thought Princeton couldn't get any more interesting ..... the Princeton Rotary asked me to be one of the guys!

Why did I join the Rotary?  Frankly, I'm in love with the mission statement:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build good will and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Ahem, the other reason is that big wheels like David Newton are members - I KNOW!  Ahem, the other reason is HUGE business and academic moguls speak at their weekly meetings and since I'm a member they have to take their photo with me!

I'm also a member of Princeton Chamber, Princeton Merchant Association and HomeTown Princeton ..... why?  I think each of them are interested in promoting Princeton so I'm a fan of all of them!

Happy Birthday Reese Witherspoon! Have We Got a Present for YOU!

Yes, today is Reese Witherspoon's Birthday ........

Reese's great, great, great (and then some) grandfather's house is for sale in Princeton!  She needs to move here and raise those kids right!

Did you know, today in 1765, the British passed the Stamp Act?  Supposedly a few trees in front of the current Alumni House were planted in opposition to the Stamp Act!  John Witherspoon (Reese's relative) was probably  inspired by those trees to Sign the Declaration of Independence!!

Her present from us?  Why, we'll give her a 2 for 1 deal on our walking tour if she closes on the house today!

Princeton Police Encourage Plans for Princeton Tour Company WORLD DOMINATION!

Yes, the Princeton Pi Day costumes can't seem to stay in my closet.  The big hoop skirt MUST make a COME BACK! I could eat ten meals a day in this skirt!

(Last night, I was hoping my get-up would help me channel Mattie Shann - she was a fed up Princeton wife who murdered her husband and son here in Princeton.  Clearly, Mattie has forgiven the Princeton police for sentencing her to a lifetime of one cot and three hots!)

"Mimi You're Son is on Nassau Street Begging for Money"....

 says my panicked mom.

"What?  Where?" says SURPRISED ME.

"Mimi, Stosh is on Nassau Street with a hat out."  says ANGRY SHE.

I look out my window to see what she's talking about ......  "He's not begging.  He's entertaining people!  My little entrepreneur!" says PROUD ME.  I run downstairs and in less than 5 minutes, Stosh had made $5!

Who knows?  If he practices enough, maybe he'll be good enough to be in the Princeton Jazz Group .......

Princeton Jazz is having an event later in April.

Buy your tickets here, spend a day motivating YOUR child to get their own Nassau street hustle down!:

I swear his gig might do better than the ghost tours!  Every Saturday night, lantern led, EMF meters, night vision too

Grover is ALOT more interesting than you could ever imagine!  Today, do your own research or tag along on our walking tour at 1:00pm!

Why did the Princeton University students leave 1,000 ducks in his front lawn?

Was his daughter Ruth REALLY the namesake for the Baby Ruth candy bar?

Why do folks in Hawaii come to visit his grave today?

Now you'll hear rumors that he married his daughter and all sorts of stuff but none of that is true.....

For St. Patty's Day .....Where Will the Beef Cakes Be in Princeton?

Hello?  McCaffrey's!

Everyone knows that's where you pick up your Italian bacon and cabbage for St. Patty's Day!

Women in Princeton are FIERCELY LOYAL to these butchers!  Some women plan their shopping days based on their schedule!  If I didn't know better, I'd say they love these guys as much as their hairdressers!

(I know I do!  Shout out to my favorite one!  ;))

While you're shopping please notice the charity shamrocks ALL OVER the store!  Did you know McCaffrey's raises an unbelievable amount of money for our local charities?  I KNOW!

A Peep O'Day in Princeton? (yep)

It's a house at the SW corner of Mercer and Olden Lane.

Laurence Hutton (y'know, the dramatic critic) lived in the "Peep O'Day" and gave it the incredible name after he expanded the property.  Mark Twain actually visited him there!  (So did Helen Keller!)

Start thinking about taking a bike tour once this weather breaks!  We get off the beaten path where I can show you the homes and hangouts of all sorts of literary, scientific, academic, artistic and business Princeton Greats!

At Peep O'Day I'll tell you about Mr. Hutton's correspondence with Samuel Clemens and the benediction he received from Helen Keller!

ELSA EINSTEIN SENT HER SECRETARY, HELENE DUKAS, TO PURCHASE LINGERIE ON NASSAU STREET.

THE SUPPLIER?  EDITH'S Lingerie on Nassau Street

(Edith was from Hungary and she and Helene liked to talk about the old country .......)

I see another stop on the Einstein Re-Enactor Tour next year!

Maybe we can get "Elsa" in a nightgown!

(You guys think I make this up but my mom's neighbor worked at Edith's for over 12!  Everyone knows the best scoop in Princeton comes from it's merchants!)

Princeton Pi Day & Einstein Birthday Party Turns Out The Big Numbers!

I'm not gonna lie, the weather broke my confidence this morning BUT THEN.....

when I saw the Pie Judging Competition attracted Congressman Rush Holt (yes, he said "hi" to me....well, kind of ... if you were there he did that nervous "stop" wave to me, but still ..... HE WAVED!),  and Gareth (pictured here) recited over 100 digits in Pi, I knew

Princeton Pi Day wasn't just a cute one time event..... this event had the Peoples' Choice written ALL OVER IT!

Then, the Plasma Physics Lab was PACKED beyond comprehension, plus, a virtual MOB was involved in the Pie Throwing Event - (sorry, we'll get that a bit more under control next year!)

THEN, hundreds stayed to see the winner of The Einstein Look A Like  Event!

So what brought the insane number of crowds to downtown Princeton?  Was it the FREE ads donated by Princeton Packet?  Was it the Trenton Times article?  Was it Town Topics?  Was it the cover of US 1?  the Trentonian?  Princeton KIDS?  Shutterbuggeek on Twitter?  We don't know but we congratulate all the amazing media for coverage of an amazing celebration of our first annual Princeton Pi Day & Einstein Birthday Party!

The Surprising Thing Is ..... I Don't Think She Did This for the Potential Blog Post....

We're one day from the first annual Princeton Pi Day .....will there be mistakes?

Y'know, I'm gonna go with MAYBE NOT!

Why the confidence?

I gotta local network of vendors as strong as steel!

Last night, I contacted my rep from Heartland Payment Services.  I had run out of paper for my credit card machine!

Kefi knew Princeton Pid Day was a bit of a stressor so she delivered spare cartridges before my bedtime!

Now, if that's not service, I don't know what is ......

(It goes without saying there's no way Princeton Tour Company is their #1 money maker!)

Thanks Heartland!  You make me feel like your #1 client!

Don't get me started on the help I get from JOYCARDS, Princeton Online, McClean Agency, Kopp's Cycle Shoppe,  Triangle Printing, McCaffrey's and Craft Cleaners ...... what?  They both deliver!  That's how I cover more ground!

I Called 911 and Got McCarter Theater??? Yep, See The TMZ-Worthy Dialogue Here:

 THEM:  "Hello, McCarter Theater here"

ME:  "Hey .... it's Mimi

THEM:  "Mimi O?  Of Princeton Tour Company?

ME:   "Yes.  (They  know me?  Anyhoo .... ) I've got a man down on Princeton Pi Day ..... I need a John Von Neumann asap....."

THEM:  "This is to help make Princeton Pi Day a success, right?"

ME:  "Right, I'm really  freaking out."

THEM:  "Don't freak out.  Stay calm.  Stay on the phone and I'll see if we can get our best and brightest to the rescue".

ME:  "Okay"

THEM:  "We're sending help now ... his name is Will Caspari .... you're in good hands."

Thanks to McCarter Theater, John von Neumann is the last stop on the re-enactor tour for Princeton Pi Day!

Is anyone noticing this "all hands on deck effort"?

ME TOO!!!!

McCarter Theater is offering their own Pi Day Special too:  31.4% off tickets to the American Buffalo performance on Pi Day!   (It's at 2:00pm)  All you have to do is mention promo code PI when you purchase tickets, online at www.mccarter.org, by phone 609-258-2787, or in person at our box office

In History, Paul McCartney was Knighted Today, ...... Did You Know Hendrix Was Also Knighted?

Oooops.

Sorry, I meant Hendricks .... as in Andrew Hendricks - Princeton University Class of '70.

He's now a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau!

How'd he get that crown?  He made history unforgettable!  (Our kinda guy, right?!)

So Hendricks spearheaded the building of the Half Moon, and using a Dutch-American crew, the Half Moon sails up and down the East Coast, stopping at festivals and other events, and serving as a floating classroom for Dutch-American history.

(In 1609, Henry Hudson sailed over here from Holland - it's a big deal in American history .... especially Princeton's ..... notice the orange colors and think about Nassau Street ..... anyhoo ....... now, visitors can tour the vessel and learn about Hudson’s voyage.

DID YOU KNOW SAILORS WERE WILDLY SUPERSTITIOUS?

NO?  DON'T MISS PRINCYCLOPEDIA ON MARCH 27TH!

WE'LL BE THERE DRESSED AS PIRATE GHOSTS AND TELLING YOU ALL ABOUT HOW SCARY IT WAS BACK THEN!

http://www.princeton.edu/cotsen/gallery-programs/princyclopedia/

Why the Hendrix teaser title?  At PREX is Jimi Hendrix studio album, "Valleys of Neptune" at Princeton Record Exchange  . Plus, they have a limited supply of lithographs to give away! We have 15 Hendrix-drawn 11" x 14" water color numbered prints to give away with the purchase of the album or the new remasters of " Are you Experienced", "Axis: Bold as Love" or "Electric Ladyla..

Anyhoo ....

The writer tells you all about why Pi Day got started, why Princeton may have steered clear of the event and why so many merchants are excited about the day.

We don't have a marketing machine in Princeton Tour Company.  No VP of PR, no Communications Specialist ..... we don't even have an intern!!

If you dig all the coverage please DON'T thank the Princeton Packet, Princeton Online, US 1, the NJ Times, the Trentonian, Town Topics and such .....

THANK THEIR ADVERTISERS!

BUSINESSES ARE RELAXING BUDGETS ON PRINT ADS BECAUSE THEY THINK YOU AREN'T READING THEM BUT I KNOW YOU READ THEM.  YOU TELL ME YOU DO ON TOURS.

The Trentonian Is Considering Getting RID of Page Six? FOR ME?

In a frenzy to have my blog (and business) GO VIRAL I accepted The Trentonian's generous offer to pay me NOTHING in exchange for feeding my blog into their website.

WHY?  TWO REASONS:

#1 - Their web traffic is SICK so I know it'll book tours in the heart of Princeton!

#2 - Because my secret plan is to become more popular than the girls on Page SIX!  (shout out to my girls at the YWCA!  I knew you'd love this Trojan Horse strategy!)

Wanna help?  Follow the blog off of The Trentonian website!  www.trentonian.com/blogs/

Pick up The Trentonian tomorrow - they're doing an article on why they picked me!

Princeton Pi Day is Getting So Big, I Had to Expand the Staff! Introducing My Very Own Admin for Princeton Pi Day!

Kim Gallagher, PhD (and big deal at GE Healthcare) will be my boy wonder at the first Princeton Pi Day event next Sunday.

WHY WOULD I PAY TOP DOLLAR AND GET  A PHD TO ASSIST ME on PI DAY?   WHY DID I SNAG A TOP EXECUTIVE FROM GE HEALTHCARE?  Because I can silly! Plus, Steve O is traveling so I don't have anyone else to boss around that day.  Plus, plus, Dr. Gallagher is a nerd for all things Revolutionary so he heads up our Suds-n-Muskets Pub Crawls ..... part of being a PTC tour guide is that you get consistently and randomly abused ..... it was his time.......

Why March 4rth is a BIG day in Princeton History .....

Okay, there's a TON of reasons but I picked my TOP THREE because I gotta get to small world and interview tour guides for the summer season ....

#1 -  In 1681, King Charles II granted William Penn the royal charter for Penn - (no William Penn, no Princeton (take a tour if I've lost you - for the rest of you ....)

#2 - In 1885, Grover Cleveland was inaugurated as 1st Democratic President since the Civil War - (no Grover Cleveland, one less stop on our awesome tours - we'll show you Grover's old Princeton crib - the current resident is a Republican running for Congress so, yes, we think Grover haunts the place)

#3 - Today, we're in 2010, Princeton Tour Company has been selected as the vendor for WOW! Bus Tours for our Princeton Culture/ Vulture Tour - we'll be bringing bus loads of folks to see the Grounds for Sculpture, Princeton Art Museum, McCarter Theater, Princeton Arts Council and MORE!

(Also a big deal in Princeton history, FDR was inaugurated today.  Einstein wrote letters to FDR, from Princeton, regarding the atomic bomb.  I posted them on the facebook fan page ..... R U a fan?)

ONLY FOUR Seats Left to Meet Decision Makers of Princeton University, Bristol Myers Squibb and other HUGE Employers in Princeton!

That's why I'm attending the Tribute to Women event this Thursday night!  Why?  Decision makers of HUGE employers are being honored there, silly!  You never know when they might have an opportunity to book a large group tour!

This woman isn't a nominee but I call her Mom .... or Mama when I'm scared ...... I called her Mama when I found out she had breast cancer last year.    She and I didn't know about the Breast Cancer Resource Center at the Y which helps 6,000 families per year but when we found out, we pledged to raise awareness:

The BCRC offers free wigs, prosthetics and classes - they teach folks diagnosed with cancer to do more than become survivors  ....... they become revivers!

Only FOUR seats left to support one of Princeton least recognized amazing resources - the YWCA, which fights racism and empowers women  (plus, it's a smart business move ......)

WHATEVER YOUR MOTIVATION, WE'LL LOVE MEETING YOU!
