Princeton WannaBe Blog

I'm not a real historian.   I didn't grow up in Princeton.    I don't have an Ivy League education.

I'm a total Princeton WannaBe.

Still, I gush about loving the heart of Princeton as much as I can!

Hey Michelle and Einstein ... Make Room For a New Face in Town!

Please join me in welcoming F. Scott Fitzgerald to our little corner of the world on Nassau Street!

(Yes, we know he wrote the Great Gatsby after he left Princeton but only the zealots would "get it" if Joy didn't use that book ....)

Do you know why he loved Princeton?

Do you know why he dropped out?

Do you know why he chose to honeymoon here?

Why did his buddy T.S. Eliot live here?

Ezra Pound?

Gertrude Stein was here for a bit too ......

I KNOW!

For Some People, Their Face is Their Fortune ..... For Me, It's All in the ....

TEETH!

No teeth = No talk .... No talk = No tours!

Meet Samuel Levine MS, DDS.  Did you know he's a Diplomat? (of the American Board of Oral and Maxofacial Surgery AND a great Fellow too!  (Fellow of American Association of Oral and Maxofacial Surgeons!)

Anyway, if you're scared in the dental chair, this might be your guy.  WHY?  Dr. Levine trains in the martial arts of Jun Fan/Jeet Kun Do.  I feel safer in that chair than anywhere on the planet!

(Technically. Jun Fan/Jeet Kun Do is the fine art of kicking, punching, trapping and grappling.... Now he never did any of that during my implant surgery but it SOUNDS like essential skills for ripping teeth out of heads, right?..... anyhoo .....)

How does he pull off doing such a great job?  His front staff!  They work hard to make sure your appointments are on time and work within your crazy schedule:

609-924-1621

Conveniently located off Bunn Drive - just down from Princeton Shopping Center!

Yes, I've Been Up Since 2AM Waiting on the NY Times Weekender ....

I'm sure other small business moguls take GETTING IN THE NEW YORK TIMES in stride but me, well, I GET PRETTY EXCITED!  (Although, I don't know anyone that doesn't wait on edge of their staircase for the NY Times Weekender .....)

The article does a BANGING job of explaining the D&R Canal and it's incredible history.  (It's also haunted by two ghosts and was the playground for America's wealthiest boys as well as  Einstein .... Anyhoo ....)

The best part?  My friends Ted, Henry, Mickey and Dave were in the shots AND the article mentions my buds at Kopp's Cycle Shoppe, Witherspoon Bread Company and Triumph Brewery!

Here's my personal shots from the late afternoon ride:

...... I guess there's a reason the New York Times hires world class photography editors like Cecelia Bohan to trust photographers like Ryan Collerd to take photos!

God, I could gush all day about GETTING IN THE NEW YORK TIMES WITH ALL MY BUDS but, guess what?  The phone is ringing off the hook for tours!  BYE!

Just When I Thought We Had Covered EVERY Target Market ....

This smartypants mom is taking her children cross country to see a ton of colleges ..... why so early?

She wants to INSPIRE them to SEE why they are studying so hard!

These kids have been to Yale, Westpoint, Harvard, Duke and more ......

GUESS WHAT?

Princeton is their favorite!  (I knew I liked'm the moment I saw'm)

She thinks I need to be marketing college counselors about sending 9th graders to Princeton!  Sounds good to me!

(Keep in mind ony a few can actually attend Princeton University but if you don't make it into Undergraduate school, study hard and keep your sites on Graduate school.  If it never comes together for you academically, make a plan to move here and be surrounded by it!  No matter what, you have to visit Princeton!  It'll change your life!)

The Best Part About Being The Crazy Tour Lady .....

The job NEVER gets boring!

See this guy?   Moe Berg.   (He was a Princeton University SPY and instrumental during WWII).  He spoke dozens of languages and, to this day, I would like to have met any woman he dated - supposedly he could dance as well as he spied.  Anyhoo ...)

I'll let you look up Jim Thompson '28 and Kermit Roosevelt Jr. too.  The others  I'll disclose on a tour .... SPY business is secret stuff don't-cha-know!)

"WHY Do You Start All Your Customer Testimonial Videos Focused on Feet?" HE ASKS .... (visibly annoyed)

"Well, two reasons ...... it started back in the winter.  I have an AWESOME pair of Prada boots and wanted to get them in the shot."  ME SAYS.

"That doesn't make any sense."  HE SAYS.

"It would if you saw those Prada boots, honey!"  ME SAYS.

HIM GIVES BLANK STARE ...... MY BUSINESS NON-STRATEGY DRIVES HIM INSANE...."What's the other reason?"

ME:  "The other reason is that it also  highlights to people that we do WALKING tours as well as biking tours.  We started as a bike tour biz so I think it's a clever nod to our walking tours."  (nervous laugh)

"Hey I got a genius idea .... if you want to hammer home the fact you do walking tours, why don't you just get rid of that bike logo?"  HIM SAYS.

ME CONSIDERS & SAYS, "No.  I like the little bike."

HIM:  "Because it's cute.  Right?"

ME:  "OMG, YES!  EXACTLY!  See?  We think more alike than you could ever imagine!"

BACK TO BLANK STARE

Now, in the South, We Have a Thing About Dressing Our Sons in Drag ...

We really do - Here's my mom with Stosh in a Day Gown!

We also have a thing about professional photographs.  (What?!!  You never know if you'll need to pony up some awesome shots for the Presidential Library.  God forbid they ever want THAT job ..... Anyhoo.....)

Our other indulgence are portraits of our children at 16 yrs old.  (I think those get hung at Camp David)

Anyhoo, Southern women's secret to affording all this nonsense, apart from skimping on fancy underwear, is SOMEONE in your circle decides to become an artist!

If you're like me, you'll  stop what you're doing now and be sending someone you love to the Kathleen Morolda's Watercolor Workshop!  For $400 you get two days at the beach, a studio and instruction from one of Princeton's best loved painters!  (Not to mention time off from your beloved subjects!)  www.kmmorolda.com or call 609-921-0434!

Greg Olsen lives in town and was the third private citizen to orbit in space.

I KNOW!  (His photo is at Iano's if you want to stalk a bit or, for the super freaks, he eats at Zorba's Brother too.  He's super philanthropic and does a TON to promote science.)

Just to prove Princeton is the home of "you can't make this stuff up" ...... Rush Holt, our Congressman, is a rocket scientist .....  I KNOW! (I see him at the Princeton Public Library a BUNCH)

(No, I don't own this shirt but did you know iover 1,000,000,000 people own it?  That's not an I KNOW moment.... that's a cry for help!)

Happy Birthday Harrison Ford! Did You Really Live in Princeton?

Hmmmmmm..... this rumor floats around Princeton EVERY year for us.

"Harrison Ford owned a house on Hodge".

"I saw him wearing that earring in Starbucks several years ago."

"He enrolled a child in a private school nearby."

Guess what?  All rumors .... MAY NOT BE TRUE!  (At least according to property records ....but ask some people and they'll SWEAR they saw him mowing the lawn with a cigar, his children went to Lawrenceville (or Lewis School - we've heard both).  Anyhoo, we're not sure about Harrison Ford BUT

the REAL Indiana Jones?  The inspiration for the whole craze?  He DID live in Princeton .... his daddy taught at Princeton University AND he dated the REAL Nancy Drew at Princeton High School!  ALL TRUE and ALL DOCUMENTED!

See?  Princeton History really IS better than Bravo!

Wanna Meet Powerful Men in Princeton? Next July 4rth .... Here's Where You Want to Set Your GPS ...

Morven Museum & Gardens had the REAL George Washington at their July 4rth events .....

They had a candle maker, ice cream maker, children's games, live singing ... even a Declaration of Independence for all the kids to sign!

(One booth had actual descendents of Signers of the Declaration of Independence ..... I KNOW!)

Our ancestor, George Leo Ross, was a Loyalist until the last minute ...... but once he set his mind to revolt he never looked back!

(The Battlefield had re-enactors and all sorts of events too.  Next year, be on the lookout for cool events like this in Princeton!)

This Day in History, Bob Dylan Recorded Blowin' in the Wind ... Bob Dylan has an Honorary Degree from Princeton? (yep!)

TRUE!

Part of these lyrics were read at the ceremony!:

"You've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks.
With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks.
You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books;
You're very well read it's well known,

Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is,
Do you, Mister Jones?

-- Bob Dylan, “Ballad of a Thin Man,” 1965

(Other things happened during that Commencement but we'll tell you about that on a tour!)

This Princeton WannaBe Is Diggin' HOT Princeton!

WHAT is up with Princeton cops?

WHEN are they going to quit law enforcement and join a TV series?

WHERE do they find these guys?

WHY are they all so cute?

HOW can they justify such hiring practices?

The Borough cops aren't the only eye candy in Princeton!  Thursdays you have the Library Plaza farmer's market, then you can hit the Princeton Shopping Center Music jam .... after all that, cool off at the Princeton Art Museum which stays open late on Thursday evenings.  (Did you know the most expensive item in the Princeton Art Museum was given by the dude that invented Listerine?  I KNOW!  Go in there and Google the donors .... SO FUN!)

Careful though, our law enforcement officers mean business in Princeton - no speeding and  no parking past your prime!   Otherwise, have a GREAT time in Princeton!

Wait, Princeton doesn't have that many Oscar Winners ..... BUT

Princeton's Nobel Prize Winners, National Book Award Winners, Pulitzer Prize Winners, National Medal Award Winners, etc. .....

now  THOSE academic high achievers would make Hollywood stars stop and take a photo !

(This post inspired because William Shratner was in Princeton last night .... I KNOW!  Supposedly, he loves the academic vibe and the small town charm of downtown Princeton!  He ate at Mediterra on Palmer Square .....)

$100 BUCKS SAYS YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS IS OR WHERE IT'S HIDING ....

TALK ABOUT REVOLUTIONARY!

Sadly, no one guessed the right answer BUT it will be revealed in this Fall's Princeton Magazine!  There is a private company in town that SWEARS our minds can control matter ..... they also studied how you can "see" into your future with subconscious thoughts.  Don't believe me?  Princeton University produced positive research on both subjects!  The article will cover what this device looks like now and a lot more ...... freaky, cool stuff, huh?

Happy Birthday Tom Cruise! You Know He Tried to Get Into Princeton Right? Here you go:

Actually, his character in Risky Business, Joel Goodson tried to get into the best Ivy League School on the planet.  Joel tried to pimp a date for his interviewer to try to get admitted ...

Anyhoo,

I think Tom and Katie should get Suri interested in the Princeton Theological Seminary .... what?  They study ALL religions including Scientology!  They actually have a Center for Theological Studies on Nassau Street - their FULL TIME jobs are to rationalize religion!  TRUE!  (On their website, they describe their mission as  "to inquire into the relationship between theological disciplines, [and of these with] ... both human and natural sciences, to inquire into the relationship between diverse religious traditions ... , to inquire into the present state of religious consciousness in the modern world, and to examine such other facets of religion in the modern world as may be appropriate ..."   Now THAT'S worth jumping on a couch about!

Plays in the Park in Edison .... (no we do not get paid to recommend stuff .... we're just can't help but gush when we fall in love!  I have a mad crush on the 1776 production AND the choreographer .... she's AMAZING!  Not only can she make American history never skip a beat, her family is ALL theatrical too!  It's like the Partridge Family only there are only four of them ..... anyhoo....)

http://www.playsinthepark.com

July 2nd or 3rd - Drive to Edison knowing the show starts at 8:30pm.   get some Korean BBQ down the street.  (The one off Old Post Road - the food looks like this - I KNOW!):

Make sure you grab your lawn chairs, a ton of friends (at $6 each you can invite 5 couples and treat - you'll feel like a rockstar!) and see the production of 1776 that will make you and your family REALLY get a feel for the American Revolution!

We all know the end of the movie but this musical will entertain and inspire everyone of all ages!
