Introducing the #1 Fan of the Academy Awards ...

Bella!  My Mom!  She is the only person I know who will tune in tonight to see The King's Speech win EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY!

Ever since I was a little girl, my mom has prepped for the Academy Awards like it was a religious holiday.  In order to be allowed to watch the Awards with her:

EVERYONE in the family had to SEE the movies up for an award.

EVERYONE in the family had to BE QUIET during the announcements.

this led to

EVERYONE in the family getting REALLY BORED which led to fake speeches, pretend red carpet posing and overall abuse of Bella's Hollywood crushes.

Hopefully, tonight's Academy Award Show will INSPIRE Bella's re-enacter performance during the Geek Freak Weekend.  She'll be playing Einstein's mother, Pauline, from 12p - 6p on Sunday, March 13th.

If Someone Wire Tapped Our House Last Night, THIS is What They Heard:

ME:  “Steve, did you hear about the AMAZING RESIDENCE at 17 HIBBEN STREET up for LIVE AUCTION?

THE BIDDING STARTS AT ONE DOLLAR!”

STEVE:  “I’d hate to sell my house for one dollar.”

ME:  “But you’d love to BUY A HOUSE FOR one dollar, right?”

STEVE:  (stares at me)

ME:  “What?  WHO CAN RESIST THE IDEA OF A LIVE AUCTION WHERE THE BIDDING STARTS AT ONE DOLLAR?”

STEVE:  (Looks at photo of house and kind of perks up)   “I admit it.  That’s a nice house.  That house is worth A LOT more than one dollar.”

ME:  “I KNOW!”  This is one of those fancy auctions where I get to wear a black dress with pearls and a HUGE pair of sunglasses while I hold up the little sign to bid. “

STEVE: “Right, and I get to hold a martini glass and wear an ascot like Thurston Howell III.”

ME:  (staring at him)

STEVE:  “It’s why you love me.”

ME:  “It really is.”

YOU MAY BE MORE IN THE MARKET FOR A PRINCETON MANSION THAN YOU THOUGHT.  CALL JENNIFER HAYDEN OF ARLINGTON CAPITAL AT 945-7510 TO GET IN ON THE BIDDING!

Here's a paraphase of what smartypants Kevin Kenyan of Arlington Capital tried to explain to me for those sincerely interested in this clever scenario:  Interest is building from Europe, several academicians, entrepreneurs, and local professionals...and by the time the auction takes place, it's conceivable that Princeton will see it's first successful residential home sale via this unique service It's a pretty exclusive program.  Only registered bidders can attend, not the general public, no neighbors and/or onlookers.  There is actually security at every auction to insure that only registered bidders attend.  To bid, a client needs to send the auction company 100k+ in escrow prior to the auction, and either Arlington Capital or their bank need to confirm they can close in 30 days for CASH.  So while prospects can get a mortgage, they also need to have a fair bit of dough just to be invited to the auction, because they need to be prepared to buy it for cash if the mortgage does not go through in time.  The seller typically gets 10 - 20 buyers in one room on one day.  The winning bidder has 30 days to settle. (Are you still reading this?  I was still listening!)   Imagine how having 10 - 20 qualified  buyers in one place at one time might impact the sales price rather than the traditional real estate sale, where one seller squares off against one buyer.  So while there is an allure of to a no reserve auction, a sophisticated seller is likely to get an excellent price for their home.  (Hmmm.....I'm sophisticated ..... sometimes.  Anyhoo .....) They will also get the home sold...other folks who have homes listed for 3mm - 4mm are, based on current absorption rates, likely to be waiting many years to sell their  home.  As long as real estate goes down in value, which is what it has done for the last 3 - 4 years, waiting to sell has a enormous cost:  not only a potentially lower sales price, but all the carrying costs waiting for it to sell it.

(He said more but you'll have to call them yourself to get more info.  I'm already SOLD!)

If you ask us, the folks at Henderson Sotheby's International Realty were BRILLIANT to partner with Conceirge Auctions and bring this to Princeton!

Does Your Name Mean Something Special? I Thought So ....

I admit it.  I'm curious about everything Princeton .... especially the love small business owners have for their business.   Here's the 411 on Monday Flowers:

ME:  “Why did you call your business Monday Flowers?  I mean, why not Tuesday?”

GEORGIANNE:  “I started the company by only doing deliveries on Monday to corporate offices for their lobbies and then it grew from there.”

ME:  “Wow!  So this started as a hobby.  Now you deliver 7 days a week, right?”

 GEORGIANNE:  “Right!”

ME:  “Ever thought of renaming the biz since you do WAY more than Mondays now?”

 GEORGIANNE:  “Hmm.  Got any ideas?”

ME:  “Well, since you deliver everyday, why not “24/7 Flowers” or “Flowers Rule My World” or “By the Minute Blooms” or “I Gave Up My Life for Flowers”?

GEORGIANNE:  “Ha, ha!  It has kind of taken over my life but I’m okay with a life full of  flowers!”

 ME:  “What’s your favorite flower?”

GEORGIANNE:  “Roses.” (No hesitation on that one.)   “I love, love, love roses.”

ME::  “QUICK!  What’s the longest lasting fresh cut flower?”

GEORGIANNE:  “Alstroemeria and carnations …. I’m no flower snob!!”

ME:  “No kidding, I get Alstromeria every week!”

 GEORGIANNE:  “I KNOW!”

I’ve used Monday Flowers a bunch and you may want to as well!  The best way to reach Monday Flowers (aka “24/7 Flowers” or “Flowers Rule My World”, “By the Minute Blooms”, “I Gave Up My Life for Flowers”) is at the Princeton shop 609-520-2005 or via her e-mail at georgianne@mondayflowers.com.

Today, Only FOREVER Ago, The Frisbee Was Invented!

Yep, today in history, the frisbee was invented out of a pie tin.

In 1871 The Frisbie Baking Company made pies that got sold to a TON of New England colleges.   That same year, smartypant students discovered that the empty pie tins could be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of procrastination.  (Yale likes to argue that in 1820, an undergraduate named Elihu Frisbie was the first to fling a tin out into the campus.  We're not real historians but since the words 'Frisbie's Pies' was embossed in all the original pie tins we're thinking this is another attempt of Yale trying to beat Princeton at something.  Anyhoo .....)

Over the years, WHAM-O created a plastic version but it didn't fly off the shelves until Princeton students made it popular!

(TRUE!  In 1957, the New York Times reported a new game played by Princeton students called “the friz”.  After that endorsement, WHAM-O never looked back!  Yes, I get a thrill looking at inventions and tying back how Princeton's residents and students make the world a better place with them!)

Hey Princeton! GORGEOUS Fresh Meat Just Moved Into the Neighborhood!

I'm sorry, can ANYONE resist an Italian man? .....

THAT CAN COOK? ....

I didn't think so.

D'Angelo's on Spring Street is now OPEN.

Count on brick oven pizza, custom-order salads, full service butcher, fresh pasta (and homemade sauces!  (And a bunch of other stuff.   Clearly, I got distracted ....)

I wonder if they know that the italian men and women created the gorgeous architecture on campus and in some of our finest neighborhoods?  I LOVE the Historical Society photos of them eating lunches at the worksite areas.   Dorthea's on John Street was the italian dormitory where italian men stayed until they saved enough to purchase homes in town and bring their families here .......

Here's Bella GUSHING over the fresh produce.

(Is it me or does she look like she got a little TOO dolled up for a run to the grocery?  Hmmmmmm ...... Not sure I blame her!)

SO Excited to Be Breaking Bread With Brother West TONIGHT!

He's the inaugural speaker for the One Table Cafe tonight!  How did One Table get Dr. Cornel West to endorse them?  It's probably about their wonderful goals:

Gradually increase the frequency of meal service to provide continuity helping feed the working poor and others.

Accomplish our goals in a friendly, attractive environment that does not presume economic stature while fostering a sense of dignity.

  • Thank you Mediterra Restaurant and Witherspoon Bread Company for donating the meal for tonight's diners.

"I’ve sat in on classes where people are talking about the ’30s and about civil rights and about Martin Luther King, and there’s this gap, as if (Paul Robeson)never existed. He’s one of the giants of the civil rights movement, and no one knows.”

said Mrs. Landzberg in this article from the New York Times.

As you celebrate Martin Luther King Day, take a minute to learn just a bit about Princeton local Paul Robeson who never got his due when it comes to his contributions toward civil rights:  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/nyregion/03towns.html?_r=1

Princeton University Students LOVED Mark Twain!

According to the New York Sun, in 1901, Mark Twain came to Princeton and stayed with Laurence Hutton, the famous writer.  He addressed the students by saying:

"You should economize," Mark Twain said, "every sin you commit and get a value out of it. If you commit a sin sit down and think about it. You must end by making up your mind that you will never commit that sin again. You should go to the next sin and use that in the same way. Now, there are only 368 sins that you can commit, so that if you begin to-morrow and commit all of them you will be out in a little over a year."

LOVE IT!

Who Crushes on Brad Pitt When You Could Crush on Robert Morris?

Very few  know that George Washington would have failed miserably without Robert Morris!  Who's he?  He's the guy who pledged his OWN assets to get the $10 gold pieces when Washington needed to pay troops for an extra six weeks of service after the battles in Princeton.

The new book, Robert Morris, by Charles Rappleye breaks down the whole story.    It shows how MUCH the French were responsible for American freedoms.  (Of course, they got into the revolution for the wrong reason. ..... they were humiliated in that 7 year war and and hated the British.  Louie 16th spent his entire regime into bankruptcy, by giving the Revolution money, troops, and use of the French navy.

The sad part?  Robert Morris died in debtors prison after the war!

Bill Stephenson is one of our 5 Star tour guides and teaches me things like this everyday!

Happy Birthday Dorothy Arzner!

WHO IS DOROTHY ARZNER?

Despite the extreme sexism prevalent in Hollywood, she was one of the very few women who established a name for herself as a director in the film industry of the 1920s and ’30s. She was able to establish what remains to this day the largest body of work by a woman director within the studio system.

She was also the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America and is also believed to be the first woman to direct a talkie, or a film with sound.

HOW IS DOROTHY ARZNER CONNECTED TO PRINCETON?

Well, a maverick like Dorothy would have been the type to go to the YWCA Tribute to Women being held on March 3rd!  This annual event celebrates local Princeton women who fight discrimination!

Happy New Year Princeton! 2011 Could Be a Life Changing Year!

I have a ton of reasons for starting a tour company, but the most important one is that I've traveled enough to know that

Princeton rivals ANY world class tourism destination site.

She's beautiful and historically significant ..... she offers access to cultural wonders and, well, she's just quirky enough to make all ages really fall in love with her.

In 2011, we're planning MORE tours, MORE culture changing corporate events, MORE community events and THE MOST INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE WE CAN MUSTER.  (Think we're a bit audacious?  Well, THANK YOU!  And with the help of Princeton Regional CVB, the NJ Tourism Division and well connected Princetonians we're feeling pretty confident!)

I took this photo in Barcelona.  Princeton doesn't need paid street actors to spice up her cast of characters but on Pi Day Princeton and Princeton Bloomsday, we'll give the Barcelona Ramblas a run for her money!
