This Is Why I Dig Being a Tour Lady ....

The best part about being the tour lady is EVERYDAY I learn something new.  Like today:

As the Revolutionary War was gaining steam, the Royals weren't so keen on getting newspapers and correspondence to colonists.  Guys like Ben Franklin and William Goddard decided to take matters in their own hands and took over the postal system.

Nassau Street was used for the first overnight express route between Philly and NY!  TRUE!

(Today is the anniversary of George Washington signing the Postal Act in 1792 which got my interest rolling.)

Please DON'T SHARE this Post With Charlie Sheen ....

This Valentine's I naively picked up several offerings from Simply Nic's .... a local boutique biz with super yummy artisanal shortbreads .....

OMG!  MY ENTIRE FAMILY IS ADDICTED TO SIMPLY NIC'S SHORTBREADS.

Who would have thought these wholesome artisanal shortbreads could disrupt my family's daily routine and alter their social networks in only a few days?

THEY ONLY WANT TO HANG OUT WHERE THEY CAN "SCORE SOME NIC'S".

(That's a REAL quote ...... Whole Earth, Cool Vines, Olive's, Princeton Farmers Market and Nassau Street Seafood can hook you up if you need a local fix .... Cherry Valley Farmers Market and Whole Foods if you're zipping outta town!)

Did you know Don Goddard, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, studied at Princeton University?

TRUE!

Happy Birthday Stockard Channing!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY STOCKARD CHANNING!

Yes, she went to Harvard but we'll give her a pass on that since we loved her in Grease!

Did you know she's on the Honorary Cabinet for National History Board with Princeton Tiger James McPherson?  TRUE!

(This all seems like meaningless trivia until you find yourself in line at McCaffrey's with James McPherson and you need something REALLY memorable to say! ;) )

OMG! PROOF that the amazing Jonathan Adler is a Princeton WannaBe!

Here's some lines from his hard hitting talk about design at Princeton Public Library:

“The color orange will make EVERY room.”

(He was even wearing an orange sweater during his speech!  I KNOW!)

“I’m schizophrenic, obsessive and studious.”

(I was recently asked to describe myself in three words.  I’ll be stealing this line from now on.)

“If I love something, I know it will work out.”

(Think about that. People from Princeton can get anything done when they are in love with it.)

“I worship my muses.”

(I love this part.  He's a first class GUSHER!)

“To me, neon is under appreciated.”

(Okay, most people in Princeton wouldn’t agree with that but if we let Jonathan Adler approve each neon design he would make it be pure GENIUS!)

When a Genius Talks, I Listen ....

I'll admit it, this winter has kept my indoors and it's starting to show.  Moving to Princeton has taught me that GENIUSES ARE CALLED GENIUSES FOR A REASON

GWYNETH PALTROW IS A GENIUS AT AGING WELL.

THIS ELIXER IS HER best kept SECRET  ...... that and working out 2 hours a day and having a staff of stylists and work out gurus ..... Anyhoo ....

ORGANIC RAW KOMBUCHA

Only available at Whole Earth on Nassau Street.

When you walk in, go to the left refridgerated case.  Your secret solution is on the bottom left shelf.

World Loser? World Foresaker? In Princeton, We Call That Avant-Garde!

The Princeton University Art Museum Gala was FULL of originals!  (I'm not just talking about the art either .....)  Regular Joes like me were talking to leading scholars from Princeton University, energy experts, artists and tycoons.

(It was called a black tie event but you saw everything from jaw dropping gowns to handmade kimonos to jeans and Ugg shoes!  My favorite was the 80 year old heiress who was ROCKING a pair of platform heels!)

Arthur William O'Shaughnessy describes the collection of characters at the Princeton Art Museum gala best!:

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams. Wandering by lone sea breakers, and sitting by desolate streams. World losers and world forsakers, for whom the pale moon gleams. Yet we are movers and the shakers of the world forever it seems.”

Every Thursday night - Princeton University Art Museum Stays Open Late

Originals Most Welcome!

460 Feet .... Why Every Healthy Princetonian Should Be BEGGING For The Dinky Train to Be Moved ....

With all this discussion about the negatives of moving the Dinky train, I decided I might as well weigh in on the subject:

The Dinky Train moving 460 feet would be a distance of 140.20800 meters.

140.20800 meters is about the same distance as walking to small world for a coffee then to bent spoon for a cupcake.

At a pace of 20 mph walking 460 feet you could burn about 11 calories!  (Throw a Chloe bag on your shoulder and you could push that burn rate to about 15 calories!  I KNOW!)

Add a few P90X squats and you're up to nearly 40 calories!  Stop at the 200 feet mark and throw some Zumba moves around and you're up to 70 calories.  Allow the Dinky train to be moved, thereby allowing Princeton University to create the Arts & Transit District while doing this work out and YOU MIGHT BE CONFUSED WITH A WORLD CLASS DANCE PERFORMER!  I KNOW!

I personally think our Town and Gown are in more agreement about this project than meets the eye. The State of New Jersey is paying $8,000 a day to keep the Dinky train rolling.  In these difficult times, I don't see that expense as defensible.  If you want to Save the Dinky Train the way to do it is to move her 460 feet.  If you bring jobs, revenue and a world class Arts District to Princeton Borough, you'll save the Dinky.

(Y'know she's been moved before, right?  She was at the base of Blair Arch.  There's a three mile marker behind the bushes to the right if you need proof!  Y'know she's currently the shortest train ride on earth, right?  TRUE!   This move would solidfy her heavy weight title for world records!)

I took this photo in 2003 at Las Ramblas Barcelona when my hubby and I spent more time abroad.  This guy was a street performer!  His costume made it look windy but look in the background at the other people to see it wasn't windy at all.    Performance arts drive tourism and spending and create a generous tax base.  Not to mention all those "intangible" payoffs ..... like great memories.
