Princeton WannaBe Blog

I'm not a real historian.   I didn't grow up in Princeton.    I don't have an Ivy League education.

I'm a total Princeton WannaBe.

Still, I gush about loving the heart of Princeton as much as I can!

Today, only FOREVER ago, Abigail Adams Laid Down the LAW!:

Well, as much as any woman could back in 1776:  Abigail was married to John Adams.  Many people called them the first POWER political couple.

In a letter, Abigail asked John Adams to "remember the ladies"  when he was working for independence:  "in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could."

I LOVE how she goes on to say, "If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to ferment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation."  (Clearly, it didn't really go down that way and women would have to "ferment" for another 150 years to be granted the right to vote.)

There's some votes on the horizon in Princeton.  Anyone who knows me understands that I am in FULL ON FERMENTATION MODE about the Arts & Transit Neighborhood.  Did you know McCarter Theater, the Princeton Public Library, Arts Council, Princeton Symphony and Mercer Hill Historic District, are in favor of this design too?  TRUE!

There'll be a vote coming up in late April and I hope elected officials will "remember the ladies" who have been emailing and sending messages in support of this incredible opportunity for our town!

Photographed here is NOT Abigail Adams.  It's Bella, my mom, dressed as Pauline Einstein.  She's encouraging me to speak out about my opinions about this project because she's big on people USING their voice when it's important.  The photographer is my uber bud Henry Vega.  He's big on living out loud too!

Two Students That Never Lived FOUND on Facebook!

We just got an anonymous tip that two students who NEVER lived are now on Facebook!  (They left messages on the official PU Main and Alumni Facebook Pages!)

Ephraim di Kahble '38 and Joseph Oznot '68 have full on profiles!  We keep asking to be their Friend but, sadly, they're only taking real Tigers.  (Either that or they're not living to make Facebook updates.)

Wanna know how the students got him admitted?

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,870918,00.html

Like that?  You'll LOVE his business partners after he left Princeton:

  • William I. Peinot (for "Bill I Pay Not");
  • Franz O. Kuchen (every international financial firm has to have at least one Swiss member);
  • Ismella D. Rose (as in "I smella de rose");
  • Jerome N. Suis-Personne (a Frenchman, short for "Je ne suis personne," or "I am nobody");
  • Lawrence D. Humphrey (a good English name with no ulterior meaning); and
  • Paul I. Niemand (German, short for "Paul ist Niemand," or "Paul is no one")

Need proof?  No problem:

Anyhoo, they sound like our kind of Friends on Facebook!

Here's Oznot's Facebook link:

"It Will Do You No Harm To Find Yourself Ridiculous"

"Resign yourself to be the fool you are."

It's an exerpt from TS Eliot 's The Cocktail Party - It was published in 1949 and written in Princeton at 14 University Place (y'know, next to the smallest house in Princeton) - Supposedly the play is a satire about Eliot's take on Princeton's delirious social scene.

Clearly, I'm too D-List to know about any stressful Princeton social scene but it's a blast to read about it!

WE WON! WE WON!

D'Angelo's is celebrating their BIG WIN as the Professional Pie Winner from Pi Day Princeton this year!

(If you ask us, this whole town is a bunch of winners!  Everyone comes together and works hard to make this an amazing community to live, work and play!  We don't always agree on every little thing but we all agree we live in a pretty special place!)

Congrats D'Angelo's!  Well deserved!

Today, Only in 1839, OK Was Accepted As a Real Word!

That's right, on March 23, 1839 OK entered the national vernacular!  OK was an abbreviation for "oll correct," a popular slang misspelling of "all correct" at the time and over time, it steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans.

(During the late 1830s, it was a favorite practice among younger, educated circles to misspell words intentionally, then abbreviate them and use them as slang when talking to one another.  I have to think the boys at the College of New Jersey were making up some slang of their own!)

Central Park Wouldn't Exist without New Jersey? Here you go:

This past weekend we went to NYC to hire some sales reps!

(Yep, we think Princeton is the "Oxford" to New York and based on our market research, New Yorkers agree!  New Yorkers are TOUGH on New Jersey though.  Supposedly, there is Princeton and then there is New Jersey.  They really don't connect the two at all.)

Anyhoo, I was sure to let them know that Central Park needed soil and peat from various parts of New Jersey to sustain much of the greenery in Central Park!

(Now, NJ peat is a primary source for how the park stays healthy!)

YABBA DABBA DO, FRED & WILMA LOVE PRINCETON TOO!

In an episode of The Flintstones entitled "Flintstone of Princestone", which originally aired on November 3, 1961, Fred briefly attends "Princestone" and becomes the star quarterback in the big football game against arch-rival, Shale.

In another episode entitled "Cinderellastone", which originally aired on October 22, 1964, Fred's dream character also attended "Princestone".

(This is in honor of Yale recently claiming Bruce Wayne as part of their fictional alumni.  I mean, I LOVED ZIP!  BOOM!  POW! but the Flintstones?  You cannot beat the Flintstones!)

Hey Princeton Time Travelers .... We Know You're Headed to the Princeton Art Museum TODAY!

Why?  Today, only FOREVER ago, was the first showing of Van Gogh's paintings in Paris.

(He had killed himself fifteen years prior to the showing so most believe that he never knew how much his work was appreciated.  Ghosthunters like me, well, we have a different view of all that.)

Anyway, head over to the Princeton University Art Museum on campus and check out the Van Gogh's on display.

Admission is FREE!

(If you feel a little breeze on your ear, it might just be Van Gogh thanking you for appreciating his hard work!)

Happy Birthday James Madison!

We can't WAIT to gush about James Madison with our private group today!

Everyone knows he was the 4th President of the United States but do you know where his dorm room was located?

Do you know where there is a portrait of him on campus?

Do you know who fixed him up with Dolley Madison?

Did you know he outlived all the other signers of the Constitution?

True!  (and that's not the good stuff!)

I'm Not Sayin' We're DONE with Pi Day, But We're DONE With Pi Day!

Photo'd here is the Albert Einstein re enactor, Bill Agress with my mother, who agreed to play Pauline Einstein during Geek Freak Weekend.

(I can say this because Bill has NO computer and will never read this .....)

Once Bill is in character, he NEVER goes out of character.

NEVER.

EVER.

EVER.

(I didn't have the heart to tell her about Princyclopedia coming up on April 9th ...... she gets to be a Centaur!)

I'm teasing - if your corporation or private group party is looking for a professional re enactor Bill Agress is DEFINITELY the guy we recommend!

OMG! David Letterman Might Do a Top Ten About Pi Day!

If the phone call from someone saying they were with the David Letterman Show was serious, he's welcome to steal from our Top Three Reasons No One Has Heard About Pi Day

Because restaurant menus would look silly with Cherry 3.14

Because New Jersey educational cuts have reduced Pi equal to 2.14 (We're teasing here .... it does sound like David material though, right?)

Because Charlie Sheen can't recite Pi

(Here's a shot from the FOX 5 News team when they came to Princeton with Jeff Edelstein to do a bit about Pi Day this past week!  It'll air on Thursday at 10:00pm.  I KNOW!!)

Princeton Has Radical Women? Yep, Here's Where to Find Them:

The YWCA Annual Tribute to Women Event!

(Each year the YWCA honors women in Princeton who improve our community.)

I was lucky enough to be at a table FULL of Princeton change agents like Joy Chen, Tamera Matteo and Valerie Aguilar.  (Not pictured were tablemates Emily Firmenich, Heather Kiscilywiz, Kirstin Haley, Lindsey Forden and Diana Conway ....

(I know, I'm a name dropper but they know it comes with the territory of my inner circle.)

During the event I kept thinking, "If the women at my table had one goal for an important cause they're the type to pull off the impossible."

(I can't figure out what to convince them to tackle but once I do, they could do a world of good for Princeton!)

Congrats to all the recipients of the 2011 YWCA Tribute to Women!  Your work is SO appreciated!
