Princeton WannaBe Blog

I'm not a real historian.   I didn't grow up in Princeton.    I don't have an Ivy League education.

I'm a total Princeton WannaBe.

Still, I gush about loving the heart of Princeton as much as I can!

Everywhere You Look, Princeton Has a Little Love Story ....

There's a little overgrown park that sits at the corner of Nassau St. and Scott Lane in just down from Whole Earth.   The park has two benches - each bench has a plaque. One has a quote from W.B. Yeats, while the other reads : "Dedicated to the Memory of John F. Hoff III 1939-1998 and his friends Sam Deturo, Andy Cahill, & Pete Callaway".

If you've ever wondered who those guys were, Andy Cahill was a resident here and John Hoff was the president of the 1st Nat'l Bank of Princeton.  Sam Deturo owned and ran Woodwinds, a beloved landscape company, and Pete Callaway owned NT Callaway realtors.

(I like to imagine when those guys decided to put the plaques on the benches, which proposed the Yeats quote and if they're proud it's still standing strong.)

THIS JUST IN! PRINCETON HAS THE BEST POT GROWERS IN AMERICA? TRUE!

Wait a second, I said that wrong ....

I MEANT to say ....  Polly Burlingham is Princeton's #1 plant designer for  intimate garden spaces and seasonal container gardens......

Like all Princeton Greats, she can't get enough of her passion!   She plants 24/7 and when she's not planting, she's traveling to gain ideas for more planting.

How does Princeton's #1 plant lover unwind?

She gets a pedicure with GREEN nail polish!

(You can't make this stuff up, right?  LOVE IT)

When I asked Polly why  she cares so much that all the potted gardens in downtown Princeton are lovely, she instantly credits Bob Bruschi, Borough Administrator, as inspiration for bringing beautiful greenery to the town!

If silver bells and cockle shells aren't making your Princeton garden grow, you might want to call in Polly!

I think I was Polly's original client, or nearly so, and we've had an incredible, creative collaboration for seven or eight or more years.  She's designed, replaced, retrofitted, revised, improvised, installed, removed, convinced, compromised (here and there!) and basically treated by yard and gardens as lovingly as if they were her own.  I would recommend her, but then she'd have less time for me!

Today, Only FOREVER Ago

Usually, my TODAY ONLY FOREVER AGO posts take a cool person, place or thing and link it back to Princeton so you have an I KNOW moment.

Here you go::

TODAY ONLY FOREVER AGO:

STAR WARS, the movie, opened

(Harrison Ford DID visit Princeton, ALMOST bought a house and, yes, the family that inspired the movie lived in Princeton  TRUE! )

Babe Ruth hit his last home run

(Ruth Cleveland, the daughter of Grover Cleveland is buried in Princeton and the namesake for the famous candy bar!  TRUE!  It's hotly debated but most history books say Ruth is the namesake.)

JFK asked Congress to support the space program

(JFK attended Princeton and when Pete Conrad walked on the moon, he took an American flag and a Princeton University flag! He got in TONS of trouble with NASA.   TRUE!)

A dude was buried in his Corvette!

(I have no idea if he has a connection to Princeton but it's enough for me because having yourself buried in a car is SO FLIPPIN' ORIGINAL he should have been given an honorary degree from Princeton!)

(I know, you're an original source kinda town so here you go!:

Are You As FUN As a Princeton 5th Grader? Here's Your Chance to PROVE IT!

Every year, the 5th Graders of Princeton Riverside Elementary School head to Gettysburg.

My son has attended this school since he was 5 years old.  To him, the Gettysburg Boondoggle is better than any MTV Spring Break Marathon:

"Mom, we get to ride in a bus .... with a real BATHROOM!"  (I really don't want to think about that but he's SO FIRED UP about it I had to list it here.)

"Mom, the tour guides wear costumes ..... "  (Stosh has been begging me to wear costumes on our tours and even though the notion of a period specific costume with a high neck collar appeals to me I've resisted.  Plus, he's headed to Middle School and he hasn't figured out the ONLY think worse than a tour guide for a mother is a tour guide as a mother dressed in period clothing ....)

"Mom, we get to eat at General Pickett's Buffet .... (Okay, that got my attention so I looked it up on TripAdvisor ... they get a SOLID 3 stars which is about 2 stars more than Stosh would require for an all you can eat dessert bar!)

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THE DREAMS of the KIDS of RIVERSIDE ELEMENTARY COME TRUE, PLEASE HEAD to 58 RIVERSIDE DRIVE ON SUNDAY, MAY 20TH, 2012

2P - 5P

$8 PER CAR TO MAKE SOME OF THE BEST KIDS ON THE PLANET FEEL LIKE

HARD WORK AND HUSTLE ARE YOUR BEST SKILLS TO MAKE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!

The #1 Mom To Ever Be Born .... MY MOM! (Don't we all feel that way?)

Anyone who has met my mother knows she is one special lady ....

EVERYONE LOVES

DONNA

(her best friend name)

BELLA

(her grandmother name and Princeton alias)

I know why everyone adores my mother.

She's smart,

(but not in a competitive way - in an inspiring way)

sophisticated,

(but not so much you want to knock her down),

funny

(but not so much she wears you out),

gorgeous

(but in a "I don't hate you for being stunning" kind of way - in a "she's a complete classic way")

and I adore Mom because she's nearly possessed with her devotion to my son!

(His name is Stosh and she and his grandaddy Shug have visited my baby boy every month of the year he was born.  I KNOW!)

What's the real reason I I love Donna/Bella/Mom?

She's not just interested in LOOKING like the perfect friend ..... or parent ..... or grandparent .....

(clearly she is NOT doing something perfect here .....)

she worries about making ME look perfect!  I KNOW!

(Here she is holding down the fort before my some big event - clearly I'm distracted so, like all good moms, she took the mother load ..... I wish I could say I was negotiating some important deal .... I think I was ordering take-out so that I could pretend I cooked it later ..... either way, you get it .... this woman HAS MY BACK!)

Happy Mother's Day Mom!

xoxoxoxoxoxoxooxoxoxoxoxoxo

Thanks for being the perfect parent for a wild child like me!
